Have You Lost Your Sparkle?

The next time you walk down the street or go to work, pay attention to the body language of the people around you. The way a person moves, speaks, interacts with and treats others speaks volumes about what is happening on both a physical and mental level. That colleague who is always short-tempered and grumpy? That friend who constantly complains or finds fault? That family member who cuts you off mid-sentence with her own opinion? Some of it may come down to personality, but I wholeheartedly believe that a person’s actions and demeanor can be a direct result of their state of health. Underneath it all, they may be well-meaning, but if they are physically or mentally unwell, to the outside world it can seem the opposite.

Now think about someone you know who radiates sunshine – that person who lights up a room. That person you love to be around because they are upbeat, friendly and kind. That person who has energy, zest for life and a certain ‘sparkle’. Have you ever wondered what their secret is?


It’s not fate. It’s not good genes. It’s not because they fell from the tree of good fortune and hit every branch on the way down! It’s because they care enough about themselves to invest in their health and well-being. They care about what they eat, how much sleep they get, what exercise they do, how they manage their stress, and the kind of company they keep. They know that without caring for themselves first, they can’t be of help to others. They have committed to a healthy lifestyle, and they have done the work to become the best version of themselves.

If you feel like you have lost your sparkle, you can get it back! But you MUST be prepared to invest in yourself and your health. Nobody else can do that for you.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was “become an expert on yourself”. Figure out the things that light you up and give you energy. Take note of how you feel after you drink a smoothie, as opposed to how you feel after eating a cheeseburger. Your body is talking to you, all the time. To become an expert on yourself and find your sparkle again, you need to start listening.
