Sad, Sluggish, Sick and Stuck In Our Ways

Blogs By Heidi

Whenever we introduce a new habit or routine into our lives it can take time to figure it out. There’s usually a bit of back and forth and trial and error until we work out what works and what doesn’t.

Introducing a whole new way of eating after 30, 40, 50 years could be considered a fairly major ‘change in routine’, and I believe that’s what holds many people back from giving it a go. There is a mindset that ‘it’s too hard’ and ‘I wouldn’t know where to start’ and ‘but what about all the treats I’ll miss out on?’

Many people will continue with their SAD (Standard American Diet – we’re not American but our diet is the same) because these days it’s acceptable to live on food with 23 ingredients from a packet, or to grab your food through a window while in your car. It’s not normal, but it’s common (go back and read my article on ‘Common vs Normal’). But guess what? Most people on the SAD diet have some pretty serious health issues. Many are already obvious. Many are not, but you can bet your life that they will rear their ugly heads sooner or later.

These are some of the issues I’m talking about. High cholesterol. High blood pressure. Fatty liver. Obesity in your 20s. Gallbladder removal in your 30s. An autoimmune diagnosis in your 40s. A heart attack in your 50s. Premature death in your 60s. Insomnia. Chronic anxiety. Brain fog. Diabetes. Thyroid problems. Debilitating menopause symptoms. Depression. The list goes on and on. These aren’t normal, but they are becoming widespread because we are not paying attention to our lifestyles and what we are putting into our bodies.

Most people will also resist change until they hit rock bottom. They may be living with dreadful symptoms that affect their quality of life every single day, but they won’t make changes until 1) they’re forced to (heart attack, stroke, cancer diagnosis), or 2) living life as they are becomes untenable and they are desperate for relief.

There is now overwhelming evidence in support of a plant-based diet being THE diet to prevent and reverse chronic illness. Whole, nutrient-dense wholegrains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds will help your body heal and thrive as it’s supposed to. The SAD diet will make you nothing but SLUGGISH and SICK.
