Tip-Toe If You Must, But Take That Step

“Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step in your life. Tip toe if you must, but take that step”.

When clients first come to see us, they are often in a state of complete overwhelm. It may be a case of ‘so much to do, so little time’. It could be a health issue going from bad to worse. It could be a toxic relationship wearing them down. Or it could be all of those, leading to exhaustion, sadness, frustration, or burnout.

The first thing we do when we see a new client is to ask them to complete a quiz to identify where they are sitting on the stress spectrum. A lot are sitting in the ‘crashed’ zone.

They find themselves in a situation where everything starts piling up, and suddenly they are unable to deal with even the most minor incidents without experiencing an anxiety attack. They are mentally frazzled yet physically exhausted and their bodies are flooded with adrenaline to allow them to keep their heads above water. On the surface they may look like they’re cruising. Underneath though, they are drowning.

Understandably, the road to recovery seems daunting and unreachable. When someone has been overwhelmed for a very long time, the thought of changing deeply ingrained patterns and habits can be scary.

But….change can be gradual. Even if you cut your coffee intake from 4 cups to 3 cups per day, that is a positive change. Even if you drink alcohol every second night instead of every night, that is a positive change. Even if you go for a walk around the block once a week instead of never, that is a positive change!

If you are feeling overwhelmed and you know things need to change, take it easy. It doesn’t have to happen overnight.

Remember, the smallest step in the right direction may lead to the biggest step of your life!
